I’m inspired to commit my first act of sabotage when I spot the soft package waiting on our doorstep. I don’t have to open it to know what it is: a shirt with Mrs Clayton’s face on it. I’m inquisitive at dinner. I ask about the big reveal. Specifically, I ask when it’s going ahead.

He had her face printed on a silk shirt, which feels like somebody meant to order cotton but selected the wrong box at checkout. I’ve never shrunk silk before, but Ms Google comes through with the goods. I soak the shirt in hot water then chuck it in the wash at the highest temperature. After a tumble in the dryer, it’s two sizes smaller – two sizes too small for Will.

I picture him struggling to get into it before class, gasping because it’s so tight, giving up, rocking up to Science without his Mrs Clayton merch, his social standing diminishing as everybody else reveals her face stretched across their chests …
